Artificial Intelligence: How Does It Help to Optimize Costs?

Artificial intelligence is the main driver of the change that companies are beginning to experience, which are already optimizing their business decision-making processes and strategies with algorithmic and predictive models.

The times are long gone when the term artificial intelligence was used and understood only by professionals in the technology world. Artificial intelligence is nowadays the main driver of the great change that companies are beginning to experience, which are already optimizing their business decision-making processes and strategies with algorithmic and predictive models.

A clear example of this is what Verizon, the telecommunications giant, is doing in the United States.

Verizon Communications, which is rolling out its 5G network nationwide, is using artificial intelligence models to optimize the process of selecting locations for thousands of wireless transmitters in different areas of the country.

“… Verizon, the largest U.S. carrier, began using artificial intelligence models in 2018 to determine the best places to install transmitters for its ultra wideband spectrum and is again using artificial intelligence for its midband spectrum, considered the sweet spot in terms of range and speed,” The Wall Street Journal explains in its article “Verizon Enlists AI in 5G Network Build-out.”

“The models, designed by internal data scientists and other employees, take into account a number of variables that can alter the strength of 5G signals, such as buildings, bridges, terrain, the position of the transmitter and other nearby transmitters.”

Thus, with its artificial intelligence model, designed specifically for the unique needs Verizon had in its process of identifying optimal areas to locate transmitters, the company not only ensures it delivers the best possible signal with its transmitters, but also optimizes the investment it has to make in infrastructure by minimizing the chances of network problems being reported in the future.

The use of artificial intelligence models is not limited to corporations developing large-scale infrastructure. The same modeling logic also applies to a variety of uses in several industries, from how to find the best location for a new point of sale, in the retail sector, to where to build a new distribution center, in the industrial sector.
